Custody and Visitation

Sharing custody among parents requires exercising legal rights and obligations in order to provide parents and children with an arrangement that benefits all.

What are some of the different kinds of child custody arrangements?

There are two types of custody: physical and legal. Physical custody pertains to the child’s living arrangements, while legal custody pertains to decisions regarding the child, including medical treatments, education, etc. In a joint physical and legal custody arrangement, children live with both parents, and both parents are involved in decision-making. Other times, one parent receives sole physical or legal custody rights, or both. When one parent receives primary physical custody, the other parent will often be granted visitation rights. Other non-parents can also seek visitation rights, including grandparents and stepparents.

It is important to us that the interests of both the children and the parents are prioritized to help build healthy familial relationships through custody and visitation processes.
